What is “the cloud“? In the context of this website, the cloud refers to an abstract, virtual place somewhere on the internet, where all manner of digital goods and services are stored, and where any modern web-enabled device, such as a laptop or a smart phone, can view this digital information, edit or use the information, or download the information to one’s device.
I call myself a cloud worker, because so much of my work is done online, and specifically in various clouds with overlapping themes, very often in concert with other workers and professionals who are working in the same clouds. Some of the same clouds which pertain to various and unrelated freelance gigs, can have many things in common to projects which I undertake in a volunteer capacity. A commercial website can find just as much usability and internet traffic in various social networks, as a nonprofit organization wishing to increase their fundraising efforts and visibility. If I help a website advertise that there is a puppy available for adoption, I will use some of the same websites, and “clouds”, as I would if I were helping a band advertise their latest album.
Because I work online, I can access the cloud from anywhere that I can connect with my digital devices: my laptop at the coffee shop, my phone while waiting in line at the grocery store, my desktop while I pet my cat.
